Samsung Galaxy S III vs HTC One X

Samsung Galaxy S III vs HTC One XIn this comparison, we're using the international version of the Samsung Galaxy S III, which comes with a quad-core Exynos CPU and 1GB of RAM. The U.S. versions come with a dual-core Snapdragon S4 CPU and 2GB of RAM, as well as LTE, except for T-Mobile's, which lacks LTE.
We're also using the international quad-core Tegra 3 version of the HTC One X - the AT&T version has dual-core Snapdragon S4 CPU and LTE.

Introduction:

The HTC One X was the first new-generation Android smartphone to come out this year. It introduced us to a new kind of Android experience – one powered by an ultra-fast quad-core processor. Moreover, it helped HTC become relevant again, after a brief period of slowdown in innovation that caused the company a few disappointing quarters. Until now, the One X was pretty much the go-to phone if a user wanted one of these new Android marvels, equipped with an extremely large screen and the latest silicon inside. With the recent introduction of the Samsung Galaxy S III, though, things are going to get much more interesting. While HTC has always been a leader in the Android sector, even its best phones have always been in the shadow of Samsung's Galaxy S series, at least in terms of popularity. Thanks to their relatively close launch timings, we now have a perfect opportunity to pit these two powerhouses against each other.

Take a deep breath, people, as what follows is the most epic Android clash for the first half of the year – the Samsung Galaxy S III is facing the HTC One X!

Design:

Samsung and HTC have always had two completely different approaches regarding the design of their handsets. While the South Koreans have never really paid attention to those expensive materials that can make your phone feel like a tank, the Taiwanese from HTC have clearly been big fans of crafting devices that look better, and last longer. Pretty much the same tendencies are found with their newest hits. On one hand, the One X is also made of plastic, but a higher quality one, giving it somewhat more refined look and premium feel. The Galaxy S III, on the other, is also using polycarbonate, but it feels no where near as high-quality as the body of the One X.

Design has always been a strength of HTC, and this is once again proven by the One X's impressive build quality. This, however, doesn't translate to how comfortable the phones are to hold. To tell you the truth, the Galaxy S III feels better in the hand, as its side edges are actually much smoother compared to those of the One X. Otherwise, both handsets are about the same size – no big difference between the two in that respect (meaning they are both very big).

Display:

Samsung Galaxy S III vs HTC One X
The radical differences between the two phones continue with their displays. The Galaxy S III, being a Samsung handset, is employing an HD Super AMOLED screen. In contrast, the HTC One X is sticking to good-old LCD, but in the significantly refined form of S-LCD 2. After our latest screen comparison, we concluded that the One X has the best phone display at this time, sporting very high levels of brightness, as well as saturated colors, with natural temperature. So, how does the PenTile-based HD Super AMOLED of the Galaxy S III compare to all that? Well, due to its AMOLED nature, the GS III's display is superior when it comes to color saturation and contrast. This screen can easily look spectacular and eye-catching – that's what it's best at. However, it is significantly colder than the One X. And thanks to its colors being saturated enough in order to guarantee an enjoyable picture, we'd consider the screen of the One X to be superior in terms of image quality.

As you know, both handsets sport HD resolution screens, so they both look incredibly crisp and clear. You might be wondering if the PenTile pixel arrangement of the Galaxy S III doesn't make it look a bit more pixelized. Well, there is a difference, but it is so small, that it can be easily neglected. In 99% of the time using the GS III, the effects of the PenTile matrix will not be noticed.

History of HTC Mobile (High Tech Computer Corporation)

HT Cho

HT Cho

Some time ago, when we were discussing the five biggest producers of mobile pones, we mentioned the saying that behind every successful man there is a strong woman. In the story of High Tech Computer Corporation (HTC), there is a dame as well. Her name is Cher Mi Wang and she is the daughter of one of the richest people in Taiwan. In 1997, she entered in a partnership with HT Cho and Peter Chou and that’s how HTC was found. Its main purpose was to bring to the market a combination of a cell phone and a personal assistant.

However, the project was not that successful; it consumed a large amount of capital and it seemed that the disaster was inevitable. Then the family riches of Mrs. Wang were used to save the day. She invested heavily in the company and brought it back on its feet by improving the engineer and designer sections. In addition, a new course was set and HTC agreed to develop products for other brands. The first success comes in the face of a mobile computer (in 2000) ordered by Compaq and later HP (after the merger of both giants). HTC becomes the big hit in 2002, when the first Pocket PCs based on Microsoft’s OS are developed. This attracts the attention of some big wireless providers such as AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless, Sprint Nextel, O2, Vodafone and Orange.

Many think that HTC has entered the game two years ago, because that’s when the first HTC branded phones appeared. Actually, during the rest of the time, the Taiwanese manufacturer has been a busy bee, producing units for the various carriers mentioned above and brands like Qtek, Dopod (division of HTC), Dell, Fujitsu-Siemens, HP, i-mate and Sharp. This helps the Taiwanese company gain popularity one step at a time with models like MagicianWizardApache and prove to be one of the best producers of Windows Mobile smartphones. 2006 is the turning point for the company, because it starts offering HTC branded phones and to have its own advertising campaigns.

The key elements, which HTC brings to the table are the innovative ideas. That’s proved by the popularTouch series, which is trying to change the public opinion and convince the consumer that the Windows Mobile devices are not only “heavy bricks” intended for work only. The models are attractive and employ the finger friendly TouchFLO interface. On top of that, HTC is the creator of the first Android OS phone, theHTC Dream (T-Mobile G1).

HTC is one of the fastest growing companies on the market, attestation for which is the third place awarded to it by Business Week in the global chart of the best technological companies in 2006. The following year, it manages to get to the second place in Asia, which results in more attention and rumors that soon, HTC will be one of the big five (top manufacturers of cell phones). The first successful step in this endeavor was becoming the leader in the production of the more and more popular Windows Mobile smartphones.

How To Secure / Protect Your OpenCart E Commerce Website ( Fix security in open cart as much as possible )

OpenCart the most customizable shopping cart ever created  is not inherently secure, and the fact that it is open-source (with everyone being able to know it’s internal code and file/folder structure) makes it even more susceptible to attacks. Here are several methods to teach you how to secure your OpenCart website.

Essential Steps To Do After Installation

  1. Immediately delete the /install/ directory
  2. chmod the config.php file in both the root and /admin/ directories to 444

Creating A Proper 404 Error Page

Create a file named 404.html in your store root (this is the base directory of your OpenCart store). You can put anything in the file. This file will be served to anyone who tries to access something inappropriately.

Securing The /admin/ Folder

  1. To obscure the /admin/ folder, rename it to a more uncommon name, such as /hahaha/. Next, edit the file /admin/config.php and replace the folder name admin with hahaha (or whatever name you renamed the folder to). There should be 5 instances of admin that you have to change. E.g. change define(‘HTTP_SERVER’, ‘http://www.yourdomain.com/admin/’); todefine(‘HTTP_SERVER’, ‘http://www.plastictravelbottles.com/hahaha/’);
  2. Password protect your admin folder with htpasswd. If you’re on cPanel web hosting, then you can do this easily with the Password Protect Directories feature. This method will require you to login twice, but it’s well worth it.

Securing The /system/ Folder

Certain files are wide-open by default. If you have installed OpenCart in your root directory, just go tohttp://www.yourdomain.com/system/logs/error.log and you should be able to download your error log, even if you’re a public user. You should protect these files, so create a .htaccess with the following code:

Order Deny,Allow
Deny from all
Then put that .htaccess file in the following 2 directories:
  1. /system/
  2. /system/logs/

Securing The /catalog/ Folder

This folder contains your images, Javascript files, and template files. Anything other than that should not be served, but that’s not the case. Just look at http://www.yourdomain.com/catalog/controller/account/address.php. You can see that the file is still being attempted to run, which poses a security risk. Either a malicious user can get more clues about your system from these error codes, or if the malicious user can find a way to upload his own malicious PHP file, then your whole system could be at jeopardy.
The solution is to put a .htaccess file (we really love .htaccess) in the /catalog/ folder with the following code:
Options +FollowSymlinks
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !^(.+)\.jpg$
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !^(.+)\.jpeg$
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !^(.+)\.png$
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !^(.+)\.gif$
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !^(.+)\.css$
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !^(.+)\.js$
RewriteRule ^(.+)$ /404.html [NC]
This way, anything other than the allowed file types of jpg, jpeg, png, gif, css, and js are blocked. So whenever someone or something accesses any prohibited file types (such as PHP), they’ll be redirected to the 404.html file that you created in the first step of this tutorial.

Securing The /image/ Folder

As above, the /image/ folder requires protection as well, and you need a similar .htaccess file to achieve this. Create another .htaccess file in your /image/ folder with this code:
Options +FollowSymlinks
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !^(.+)\.jpg$
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !^(.+)\.jpeg$
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !^(.+)\.png$
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !^(.+)\.gif$
RewriteRule ^(.+)$ /404.html [NC]
Note: If you use other file types in your /catalog/ or /image/ directories such as .swf or .flv, then you have to add another RewriteCond line to the .htaccess for that specific file extension.

Top free open source ecommerce / shopping cart platforms

I personally prefer opencart as well as OScommerce as those system are easier to customize as the platform used is easy to understand. Also large number of free plugin available compared to the rest . magento is good if you can spend some cash otherwise of no use unless your a good developer.

When it comes to open source ecommerce platforms, there are plenty to choose from. Here, we take a close look at the 15 best available, which should help guide you in the right direction. I’m not going to lie- finding the perfect platform is not easy.
Each one has its own set of pros and cons and has been designed with a slightly different user in mind. Uploading products and customising your store can be very time consuming, so make sure you have given several platforms a try before you make that final decision and integrate one into your site.

1. Magento (free)

You’ve only got to look at Magento’s client list to realise what an excellent piece of open-source software it is. Samsung, The North Face, Stussy and Nespresso all use it to power their online stores. It’s used by 30,000 merchants and is the world’s fastest growing ecommerce platform. You have to pay for the Enterprise Edition, which is packed full of extremely useful features, but the Community Edition, meant for developers only, is free to download and use.

2. osCommerce (free)

osCommerce is absolutely free under the GNU General Public License and caters very well to most people’s needs. Unsurprisingly, considering how easy it is to set up and run, it’s extremely popular, powering over 228,700 online stores. Such popularity does come with a significant downside however- it makes it harder for you to differentiate your store from the thousands of others out there. If you want to stand out from the crowd, you’re going to need to use some of the 5,800 add-ons available, some of which cost money.

3. OpenCart (free)

Not only does OpenCart look great, it’s extremely scalable. You can create an unlimited number of categories, sell an unlimited number of products, accept multiple currencies, use multiple languages, and choose from over 20 payment and 8 shipping methods. It’s user-friendly and search-engine-friendly too, so will help your prominence in Google. Customers can even review and rate the items you sell. It’s not as popular as osCommerce, so help and guidance is not so freely available, but it’s a darn sight better looking.

4. Spree Commerce (free)

Spree is an open-source ecommerce platform for Ruby on Rails. Using Spree’s extension system, you’ll be able to customise your store and mark yourself out from your competitors. Useful features include support for over 50 payment gateways, single page checkout and custom tax logic, which can save merchants lots of time and effort. It also comes with Google Analytics built in.

5. PrestaShop (free)

PrestaShop is another robust, professional-grade e-Commerce solution that you can download, install, and use for free. On the back end, you’ll use a full-featured back-office application to manage your online business (including inventory, orders, shipping, and customers) in real-time. Your customer’s payments are sent directly to your commerical bank account using the latest security technology.

6. VirtueMart (free)

VirtueMart, which has been designed to work alongside Joomla!, is a really neat cart which customers feel instantly comfortable with. Not only does it let customers buy things, it lets them create an account, add addresses and access their order history. Multiple languages and currencies, and unlimited products and categories are supported. 2.5 million people have downloaded VirtueMart so far and the vast majority is happy with the results.

7. Ubercart (free)

Ubercart is specifically designed for people selling things like file downloads, event registrations, website access passes and event tickets, rather than physical products. Like VirtueMart, which must be integrated with Joomla!, Ubercart must be integrated with Drupal. Drupal users will feel comfortable choosing the ideal modules and themes to customise their shop with, but if you’re not a Drupal user, I suggest choosing a platform that’s a little more straightforward.

8. Zeuscart (free)

The best thing about Zeuscart is its user interface, which is rich, attractive, user-friendly and generally less boring than most of the open-source UIs that I have to look at on a daily basis. Designed with small and medium businesses in mind, users can make the most of SEO friendly URLs, gift cards, discounts, email templates and tier-pricing, which makes it possible to decrease prices for bulk orders.

9. Afcommerce (free)

If you want to keep your ecommerce platform really, really simple, then Afcommerce could be the option for you. It’s not particularly good looking, neither on the customer nor the user side, but it works right out of the box and is ideal for beginners. It has a speedy one-page checkout, customer help pop-up windows and customer accounts are generated automatically from orders.

10. Zen Cart (free)

Easy to install, easy to customise and easy to manage, Zen Cart is perfect for those who want a straightforward ecommerce platform without the fuss. It comes with a newsletter manager, discount coupons, gift certificates and all the basic features you’d expect. Users can make the most of the numerous add-ons available to customise their store and make their admin experience a little easier. Too many add-ons, however, and the UI does get rather cluttered, which is a downside of the platform.

11. SimpleCart js (free)

SimpleCart(js) 2.0 is no longer only for Paypal. It now works with Google Checkout as well. You can now add increment, decrement, and remove buttons to your cart. You can also rearrange items, change the HTML tags, do whatever you like to display your cart how you want. No databases, no programming, no headaches. A simple javascript shopping cart in under 20kb that you can setup in minutes. It’s lightweight, fast, simple to use, and completely customizable. All you need to know is basic HTML.

12. Tomato Cart (free)

TomatoCart is the new generation of open source shopping cart solution. It is branched from osCommerce 3 as a separate project. As web applications become more and more sophisticated, modern web 2.0 technology such as Ajax and Rich Internet Applications offers significant usability improvements and makes interacting with the web interfaces faster and more efficient.

13. CubeCart (free)

CubeCart is great. It integrates really well into all kinds of sites and looks very professional from the customers’ point of view. CubeCart 3 is free and CubeCart 4, the premium platform, costs £110. There are a number of significant differences between the two: CubeCart 3 has 3 skins, CubeCart 4 has 5; CubeCart 3 has 4 payment steps, CubeCart 4 has 2; customer registration is mandatory in CubeCart 3, but optional in CubeCart 4 etc etc etc. I recommend investing in CubeCart 4 if you’re serious about using the platform for a long time, but suggest you give 3 a go first to see if you like the feel of it.

14. RokQuickCart (free)

RokQuickCart is a very, very simple cart for Joomla!. Its simplicity, however, is both a help and a hindrance as although it can be set up in minutes, it lacks some features which you’ll find in other platforms in this list, for example, it only accepts payments through PayPal and Google Checkout. Having said that, it generally looks good and product image display is impressive.

15. StoreSprite (free)

Despite being completely free, StoreSprite offers many features that you’d expect to find only on paid-for and more popular platforms. These include loyalty points, customer ratings and reviews, status notifications, order tracking, special offers, best sellers and shopper accounts. The main drawback of the platform is that your store will come with visible StoreSprite copyright notices, unless you pay to have them removed.

Premium Ecommerce Solution

If you are looking for a premium e-commerce solution I would recommend Shopify. Shopify is secure, easy to use, and best of all, offers fully customizable store designs. Over 20,000+ stores run on Shopify. Start your free, no-risk, 30 day trial now.
