The Urban Development Authority (UDA) that functions under the Defence Secretary is working to acquired the 10 perch plots of land given to Arjuna Ranatunge and Hashan Thilekaratne for helping Sri Lanka win the World Cup in 1996. Every member of the 1196 Sri Lankan cricket team were given a 10 perch land in the Battaramulla area.

The land near the Western Provincial Council building in Battaramulla was divided into equal plots and distributed among the cricketers following a proposal by then Sports Minister S.B. Dissanayake. The plots of land were handed over to the cricketers by former President Chandrika Kumaratunge.

The UDA has informed the cricketers who were given the lands to write their objections within
two weeks if there were any against the acquisition of the lands by the government. The Authority has stated that the government had to take back the lands as they were not being used.

A former senior of the Sri Lanka cricket team said the government's move to acquire the lands given to the cricketers who won the World Cup in 1996 would affect the morale of the present players when they are playing the World Cup 2011 matches.
