Minister Samarasinghe loses steam at the HR Council

After making much noise the Sri lankan government fired a blank at the Human Rights Council in Geneva on the 25th. iIt is reported that Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe who represented Sri Lanka did not respond to any questions asked by the international community regarding sri lanka's human rights issues.

His lengthy speech was almost entirely dedicated to boast about the economic development of the Percy Mahinda's government

Issues like the failure to take action against the violation of human rights, the continuation of the Prevention of Terrorism Act, the assassinations and intimidations being carried out in the North and the suppression of the media were not included in his speech.

The Minister lied to the Council that 80 percent of the Emergency Regulations have been relaxed, but failed to respond to the query on whether the Prevention of Terrorism Act could be applied in place of the Emergency Regulations that have been relaxed.

Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe also remained silent on the powers taken by the President under the 18th Amendment to the Constitution.
